Eye Exam Frequency

For adults 20–64, a comprehensive eye exam every 1–2 years is recommended. If you have certain eye health risk factors like diabetes, annual exams are recommended.

Contact lens wearers should also have yearly exams to assess if their eyes are healthy and the lenses are fitting correctly.

Adults over 65 should have annual eye exams to monitor age-related eye changes.

How to Prepare for Your Eye Exam

It’s important to us that you have a smooth and positive eye exam experience. There’s not too much you need to do to prepare.

We kindly ask that you bring your current glasses or contact lenses and any cases or solutions you use. It’s also helpful to have a list of your current medications and any family history of eye or systemic health conditions.

This information will help your eye doctor provide a more comprehensive eye health evaluation and help you get the eye care results you need.

What to Expect During an Eye Exam

During your eye exam, your eye doctor will conduct a series of tests to assess your vision and overall eye health.

These tests typically include checking your ability to see clearly at different distances, examining the back of your eye with dilated pupils, determining your prescription for glasses or contact lenses, and assessing your colour vision.

Your doctor may also check for certain eye conditions like glaucoma or cataracts, which can affect your vision over time.

Diagnostic Technology

At Vision Care Centres, we pride ourselves on using reliable diagnostic technology to detect subtle, early signs of eye problems. When eye diseases are caught early, we have a better chance of preserving your vision for longer.

From modern imaging techniques to computerized vision analysis, we’re well-equipped to identify and address a wide range of eye conditions. This means you can rest assured that your eye health is in good hands.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

OCT is a noninvasive imaging test that provides detailed cross-sections of the retina and surrounding tissues.

It’s like a high-resolution camera for your eyes, allowing your doctor to detect early signs of conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Catching these conditions early helps protect your vision and prevent further damage to the eye.

Optomap is a wide-field retinal imaging technology that captures a high-resolution image of your entire retina in a single flash. This allows your doctor to see a larger area of your retina than traditional eye exams, making it easier to detect subtle changes that may indicate underlying eye problems.

Tonometry measures the pressure inside your eye, which is important because elevated eye pressure can be a sign of glaucoma.

The Tono-Pen uses a gentle touch to measure eye pressure, while non-contact tonometry, often referred to as the “air puff” test, uses a puff of air to measure pressure without touching your eye.

Both methods can provide accurate measurements and help your doctor assess your risk for glaucoma.
